How to Know if You’re Making a Difference

Wendy Watkins
At least half of the people that hire me as their business strategist proclaim “making a difference” as a focus of what they want to accomplish.

That statement has a different meaning for each of us.

For some, this intention presents itself as enhancing their client’s experience. For some, it shows up in the way that they treat their employees. And for a lot of people, it shows up in contributions made to their family and community, local and/or global.

In my last article, I talked about how I like to create a theme for each year, to help me stay on track with what’s truly important to me. (2014’s theme is is still in the creation process. Look for the unveiling in the next newsletter!)

The noble purpose of “making a difference” shows up in my theme EVERY year. It’s a core piece of who we are as humans, and certainly as who we are as professionals in the beauty and wellness industry. Helping others to look good and feel good is definitely part of “making a difference.”

So how do you know if you are making a difference?
Over the past year, my colleague Paula and I have been working on a program that will be released in 2014.  Simply Flourishing utilizes an assessment – oh, how I love assessments! –  to measure where you are on the scale of “flourishing to languishing.”

In other words, where is your Joy Factor?

Once we see where you are on the scale, we offer a couple of practices for you to weave into your day, so you can increase your experience of flourishing.

And let’s face it – if you are looking to make a difference, experiencing more happiness in your own world makes it a bit easier to share that gift with others.

But I know you’re already looking at the New Year and determining what you want to create in the next 363 days.

So, instead of making you wait until we launch Simply Flourishing, here’s a taste of one of the exercises we share with our clients who take the assessment. . .

One important element I have learned this year, is that measurement is key.

So, how do you measure whether you are making a difference?

3 Questions for You

Come up with 3 questions to ask yourself every day.

For example:

1. Did I make a difference in the world today?

2. Did I make an impact which will have a longer (butterfly) effect?

3. Do the people I love know I love them?

(These example questions are used by a colleague to measure her daily impact. It will be best if you take a few minutes to reflect and create your own 3 questions.)

Your questions should reflect the things you hold dear and be easily answered in a “yes,” “no,” or “somewhat” response.

Once you have created your questions, once a day, preferably in the evening, take a minute to reflect on each question. They become your barometer to know whether you truly are making a difference.

This bit of reflection will not only help you to raise your Joy Factor. It will also keep you on task for doing what is most important to you – making a difference!
